I took a break—and here’s what I learned about email

In taking an extended break from business to focus on my family, I've learned a lot about myself, the world around me and the people in it.

The biggest lesson I've learned is that as long as you're breathing, there's still time to do what's on you heart. You still have have a chance to reach the goal you've already put in motion, even if things don't look like you thought they would.

I see email marketing the same way. As long as you've got a list of people who have said yes, you still have a chance to turn those subscribers into clients, customers, and community members.

You’re probably want to use email marketing as your main revenue driver, but it’s damn near impossible to drive revenue when you can’t get your subscribers to open your emails or take action on your offers.

Here are a few tips I've implemented time and time again for myself and for multimillion dollar brands to bring life back into a struggling email list:

Start With An Audit

Take some time to not just look at the current state of your email marketing strategy, but document it. If you don't, you run the risk of repeating the same mistakes or overlooking success and things you should be doing more of.

Here are the first steps to completing an email audit

  • Know your numbers - opens, clicks, unsubscribes; get a running average
  • Manage your subscribers - evaluate your tags, segments, landing pages and forms; keep things aligned with your goals
  • Revisit old content - see what worked well and what didn't; ensure that your most recent content is doing what you intended it to do
  • Make a plan - put it all together and create action items on what to do next

Adjust Your Email Content Strategy

Based on the insights you gathered from your audit, adjust your content strategy with the following in mind:

  • Focus on one offer at a time - don't confuse yourself or your audience by splitting your efforts between multiple offers. Stick to one that you can talk about 15 different ways and go for it.
  • Talk to one person solving one problem - this is one piece of advice I go back to EVERY time I write an email. Keep one person, client, or customer in mind as you write and talk to them like you know what they need, because you do!

Map Out A Re-engagment Strategy

If subscribers are not responding to your emails like they have in the past, then its time to re-engage. Using the content strategy you mapped out in the previous step, map out a short re-engagement series

  • Don’t over think it. Create 3-5 emails with catchy subject lines. The primary goal is to get subscribers to open the email, so scroll-stopping subject lines are a must!
  • The secondary goal is to get them to click a link in your emails. This shows their interest in the topic and potentially your offers. Share links to freebies, blogs, related videos, other resources that you’ve found helpful.
  • Plan to send your emails 3-5 days apart. After the last email, evaluate the response. How was your open rate? Your click rate? Those answers will guide you on whether to clean your list, segment more aggressively, or shift your content or offer strategy.

Acquire new subscribers

This is the last step in revitalizing your list. If you've done an audit, switched up your content and tried to re-engage subscribers, then your next step should be acquiring new subscribers. They keep your list fresh and engaged.

  • Quality over quantity - Its an old saying but its true!
  • Try offering a targeted lead magnet (one person, one problem, one solution)
  • When promoting your list, call out who you’re trying to reach, it makes it easier for them to find you.

My Last Point (I Promise)

Above all, write about what you care about. Don’t waste your time, sending emails about the things that you don’t care about because it will show.

I know these tips are a lot to take in ,but start at the top of the list and work your way down. And if you’re absolutely over trying to piece together a working email strategy, join my services waitlist. Limited Spots will be reopening soon and those on the list will get first dibs.
